About this role

Spruce Grove Sign Services is a sign shop in Beechville, NS, producing exterior signage, vehicle graphics and storefront lettering for businesses across Halifax. We are adding a junior graphic designer to our small production team and will train the right person on sign-specific design and file preparation.

A typical day starts with a work order and a proof: you build layouts in Illustrator, set type to fit a real sign face, and check dimensions against our production sheets. You spend part of the day at the desk and part in the shop reviewing printed panels with the fabricators. Files go out to cutters and printers, and you follow each job through to installation.

What you'll be doing

  • Layouts. Build sign layouts and proofs in Adobe Illustrator from customer artwork and work orders.
  • File preparation. Set up print-ready and cut-ready files, checking size, bleed and colour against the production sheet.
  • Proofs. Prepare proofs for customer approval and revise them with the shop manager's direction.
  • Shop review. Walk finished panels with the fabrication team and catch errors before jobs leave the building.

What they're asking for

  • Education. Diploma or certificate in graphic design or a related program, or an equivalent portfolio.
  • Software. Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator; familiarity with Photoshop is an asset.
  • Tickets. No certification required; a valid driver's licence is an asset for shop errands.
  • Conditions. Ability to work in a shop environment with press and cutting equipment running nearby.

What the employer offers

  • Pay. Starting wage reviewed after the three-month probation period.
  • Coverage. Health and dental benefits after six months for full-time staff.
  • Gear. Shop-provided work boots allowance and all design software licences paid by the company.
