About this role
Fundy Tidal Electric operates a working farm on the benchland above Ashcroft, BC, where we grow hay and market vegetables and keep a small flock of sheep. We are hiring a farm worker to join the crew for the season, with the option to stay on for the right person.
The day starts early at the yard and follows the season. In spring that means planting and setting irrigation lines, in summer haying and cutting vegetables for the stand, in fall bringing in and packing the crop and getting the animals ready for winter. You will work outdoors in heat, wind and the occasional cold snap, and you will finish most days dirty.
What you'll be doing
- Planting and cultivation. Prepare beds, set seed and transplants, and keep the rows weeded through the growing season.
- Harvest and packing. Cut, wash, grade and pack vegetables for the farm stand and wholesale orders.
- Livestock care. Feed, water and move sheep, and check fences and water lines daily.
- Equipment operation. Run tractors, a small baler and hand tools under the direction of the farm manager.
What they're asking for
- Tickets. A valid driver's licence and reliable transport to the Ashcroft yard, as the farm is outside town.
- Physical fitness. Able to lift 25 kg, work on your feet all day and bend and kneel in the field.
- Experience. None required; we will train the right person in equipment and animal handling.
- Conditions. Willing to work in all weather and to start early, and able to follow safety instructions around machinery.
What the employer offers
- Overtime. Hours beyond 40 in a week paid at time and a half.
- Gear. Work gloves and safety glasses supplied, and a boot allowance after 60 days.
- Accommodation. Shared on-farm housing available for a modest monthly deduction from pay.
About farm and agriculture work in Canada
What the work is
Farm work covers planting, harvesting, livestock care, packing and equipment operation. It is seasonal across much of Canada, physically demanding, and usually outdoors in extremes of heat and cold. Some employers provide accommodation on or near the farm.
What employers usually ask for
Formal qualifications are rarely needed. Employers look for physical stamina, reliability, and willingness to work long days through harvest. A driving licence or tractor experience is an advantage, and livestock roles usually want some animal-handling experience.
If you are applying from outside Canada
Seasonal agricultural work is often arranged through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which ties your work permit to one named employer. That limits your ability to change jobs if the arrangement turns out badly, so check the employer carefully before committing. Never pay a recruitment fee for a farm job — charging workers for a job placement is illegal in Canada.
